Planning a wedding is an exciting journey filled with countless decisions, and choosing your wedding hair is one of the most significant. Your hairstyle will not only enhance your beauty but also complement your entire look on this memorable day. This guide will help you consider everything, from style choices to hair care, ensuring you look stunning on your special day.

1. Start Early: Hair Preparation Timeline

Achieving your dream wedding hairstyle begins with an early start. Ideally, commence your hair care regimen at least six months before your wedding day. This time frame allows you to grow your hair, enhance its health, and explore various styling options. One thing I HIGHLY recommend is using very little heat if any at all on your hair. If you choose to use heat, use a heat protectant. Your hair can also benefit from conditioning masks (1-2 times a week)!

Schedule an initial consultation with your hairstylist. Discuss goals like growing your hair longer, adding volume, or improving its overall condition. For example, if you want to grow your hair by a few inches, regular trims every six to eight weeks can help maintain healthy ends while avoiding breakage.

2. Choose Your Style

Deciding on a hairstyle is a crucial step. Here are three of the most popular styles!

  • Updo: This style is perfect for a formal look and showcases your dress’s neckline beautifully.

  • Loose Waves: Ideal for a romantic atmosphere, loose waves are perfect for beach or rustic weddings.

  • Half-Up, Half-Down: This style combines elegance with a relaxed feel, being versatile for any wedding theme.

When selecting your hairstyle, consider your dress style and what you are comfortable wearing. Your hair must complement your bridal look, and feel comfortable for you in order to enhance your overall elegance.

3. Trial Runs are a Must

Once you've chosen a style, book a trial run with your stylist! I can not stress this enough! Trials are an investment to ensure your hair is perfect for you on your wedding day.

During the trial, bring along photos for reference and openly communicate your preferences. I love when my brides bring along photos and it also helps to know what they like and what they do not like. I always ask what they are comfortable with and what would be out of their comfort zone. Almost 90% of time there is always adjustments that are made to ensure the style is perfect for the wedding day- and this is totally ok! Trials are also a great opportunity to meet your stylist and feel more comfortable on your wedding morning.

4. Hair Care Routine

Establish a solid hair care routine prior to your special day. This should include essential practices like:

  • Regular trims: Keeping your hair healthy with trims every 2 to 3 months can prevent split ends and keep your hair feeling thick.

  • Deep conditioning treatments: Regularly using deep conditioning masks can improve hair strength, leaving it shiny and beautiful on your big day. A study revealed that deep conditioning can increase hair elasticity by up to 30%!

  • Proper washing and styling: Avoid washing your hair too frequently, as this strips it of natural oils. Aim to wash your hair every 2-3 days using sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners for hydration.

Consider incorporating hair oils or masks into your routine for extra moisture and shine. When using hair oils, only apply from the mid section of your hair down to the ends. A little bit of oil goes a long way and never use oil on your hair before you get it professionally styled!

5. Decide on Accessories

Accessories can significantly enhance your hairstyle. Whether a classic veil, floral crown, or stunning hair clips, choose pieces that harmonize with your hair and dress.

Test how these accessories look with your chosen style during your trial run. If you are unsure what works best, ask your stylist for their recommendations based on your hair type and style!

6. Consider Weather Conditions

Weather can dramatically impact your hairstyle. If you're having an outdoor wedding, be prepared for conditions like humidity or wind. Humidity is something that affects everything, I recommend using mousse before blow drying your hair to help the humidity.

Discuss options with your stylist to ensure your hair looks flawless regardless of the weather. For instance, using an anti-frizz serum or a hydration cream followed by a heat protection spray can help manage humidity, while a stronger hairstyle (like an updo) can withstand the wind.

7. Day-of Essentials

As the wedding day approaches, make a list of essential items you'll need. Include:

  • Emergency hair products: Keep mini hairspray or anti-frizz serum in your clutch for quick touch-ups. I also provide additional bobby pins in case of an emergency's!

  • Hairpins and elastics: These are crucial for securing your hairstyle throughout the festivities. Elastics are used throughout styling for extra support, especially for thick or heavy hair.

  • A comb and mirror: Handy for last-minute adjustments.

These essentials will keep you calm and prepared as you get ready for your ceremony!

8. Delegate Responsibilities

On the wedding day, delegate hair-related tasks to trusted friends or family. This could involve holding items you may need or assisting with last-minute touch-ups during pre-wedding photos. I always ask who will be removing the veil so I can teach them how to safely remove the veil when the time comes!

Having a designated point person can reduce stress, allowing you to focus on enjoying your day to the fullest.

9. Ready for the Big Day

As you approach the wedding day, remember to relax! Treat yourself to pampering the night before. Get a good night's sleep and stay hydrated to feel your best. (don't forget to eat even though it may be hard to!)

On the morning of your wedding, remind yourself to embrace the joy of the moment without stress. Focus on the excitement that lies ahead, knowing all your preparations will pay off. Enjoy every little moment because this day is all about you!
